Renton’s Imago Dei seeks to bridge cultures with Christianity

By Highlands Community Council

“A lot of us see ourselves as a misfit church,” said Pastor John Kim of the Imago Dei church, located in Renton at Kennydale Elementary School. Kim founded the church in April 2009.
The members of the church come from various backgrounds, and only a few conform to archetypes.”What’s unique about our church is that most of us have second chance lives,” said Kim. “We don’t fit the typical Asian American church where perfection and education are norms. Many of our people have been in their second or third marriages. We have people who are struggling with addictions. Some of them have never finished high school, and some have finished college.”

Birds in conflict: Bald eagles attack colonies of herons across Western Washington

By Highlands Community Council

Full article is posted at the Seattle Times.

Near a small pond on Renton’s western edge, nests of great blue herons, perched up to 100 feet high in a stand of cottonwood trees, appear safe from any danger from below.

But not from above.

With increasing frequency, this heron colony and others throughout Western Washington are being attacked by bald eagles. It’s gotten to the point that Suzanne Krom, founder of a group called Herons Forever, said eagles are treating heron nesting grounds as “all-you-can-eat, fast-food delis.”

Renton trying to minimize pollution discharge into storm drains

By Highlands Community Council

While we support protecting the environment, sometimes you just have to wonder how much money people get paid to develop all the fancy graphics for the City of Renton.

March 25 2010, 3:50 PM at the Renton Reporter.

The City of Renton has begun conducting a Storm System Inventory Mapping project throughout Renton to help eliminate illicit discharges to the stormwater system and meet state and federal standards.

The goal is to minimize the discharge of pollution from municipal stormwater systems into streams, lakes, rivers and wetlands to protect their beneficial uses (swimming, boating, fishing, and aesthetics) and environmental resources.

Renton church wages war against city’s first all-nude club

By Highlands Community Council

Editors note:  This is not in the “industrial area”.  It’s at the corner of Interstate 405 and Highway 167.  Highly visible sign from I-167 and I-405.  If you don’t believe us, take a look here.  It’s the building just west of Taylor Av Sw.

In addition.  Oak Harbor residents are fighting a similar battle.

RENTON, Wash. — Prayer and the Bible in hand, a local church has waged war against the city’s first strip club. The self-titled “prayer warriors” of the Celebration Church say they’re ready to chase sin out of their town. The members filled the city council chambers on Monday, worried about the expected evils of the club.

“None of my boys do I ever want to go to this club,” said Ricki Jones. ”You’re naive if you don’t think that drugs, and prostitution and all of the rest of the crime doesn’t go with it,” said Mark Jones.

Club Sin Rock is set to open soon at the southwest corner of Interstate 405 and Highway 167, a prime location.

City ramps up its campaign with I am Google for Renton

By Highlands Community Council

Once again, the City of Renton is spending wasting our tax dollars on a Google marketing program.  Maybe they could spend some of that money and fix potholes and sidewalks.  Back to what the City of Renton should be doing.

And let’s not forget the our mayor was against a public relations manager when he was on the council and now we have at least two communications specialists?  Yet another waste of taxpayer money.

At the very end of the video you will notice everyone wearing bright colors to match Google’s logo.  Don’t forget, we paid for them to coordinate all this.  Maybe those employees had nothing better to do on that day.  Maybe they did this on their own time.  We doubt it though.

Hopefully since the deadline was Friday, March 26th, this is one form of March Madness that will be over.

Kelley Balcomb-Bartok and Lisa Garvich, two communication specialists in the city’s Communication Division, teamed up to produce the minute-long video now showing on YouTube.
