RENTON, Wash. — On the very first day the new cell phone law took effect, Dixie Mosher got pulled over.

“I’ve got the lights behind me, from across. He came across traffic,” she said. “I was like, ‘Is there a problem?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, I pulled you over, because you were using a cell phone.’”

Renton, WA: New sidewalks are appearing in the Renton Highlands as part of the city’s redevelopment plan for the neighborhood. As part of the city’s Sunset Area Community Investment Strategy, work on a new concrete sidewalk is underway from NE 5th Street to NE 20th Street, between Edmonds Avenue NE and Monroe Avenue NE, in the Renton Highlands.

A total of 4,700 linear feet of sidewalk is being constructed. The project includes new four-foot wide sidewalks and installation of 20 wheelchair accessible ramps to significantly improve pedestrian safety.

“This project will greatly enhance safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists in the Sunset neighborhood,” said Mayor Denis Law. “Sidewalk improvements were identified as one of the key priorities of the Highlands community and this project is part of our overall redevelopment plan for the neighborhood.”

The Sunset Area Community Investment Strategy (CIS) is based on the recommendations of the Highlands Task Force, and proposes a plan for redevelopment and public investments in the Renton Highlands. The timing of the CIS is in conjunction with redevelopment plans for Sunset Terrace, a Renton Housing Authority property, as well as potential development by the Renton School District. CIS recommendations include creating a “third place” or public gathering space in conjunction with a relocated and expanded Highlands library, initiating pedestrian and streetscape improvements, advocating for improvements on Sunset Boulevard, and the development of a sub-regional storm water drainage facility.

The sidewalk project will cost $148,606 and is expected to be completed by March. For more information on this project and the Sunset Area Community Investment Strategy visit RentonWa.gov.

Please report aggressive animals to Renton Animal Control

By Highlands Community Council

UPDATE via E-mail from Claudia:

We met the man who is taking care of  this little dog. He said Ozzie is home from the vets with a drainage tube. There was no damage done to the internal organs.

He is home in pain. Supposedly Animal Control will be out to pick up the complaint. It will take him about a month to heal.

From Claudia Donnelly via e-mail.

I was walking my dogs this morning at Hazen and ran into some I know — with his dog. He usually has a second dog with him.He told me this story.

He was walking both dogs across the street from a house where a dog is chained up. This chained up dog is well known with the Animal Control people. As this person passed in front of the house, the chained up dog lunged once and twice to get off the chain. The dog lunged a third time and broke the chained and attacked one of the little dogs. This little dog was mauled several times by this bigger dog before it was beaten off.  Evidently this dog has done this before — but people haven’t reported.  The person I talked to today plans on filing a complaint with Animal Control.

In the meantime, the little dog was at the Vets on NE 4th and was going to be operated on today — to sew up his wounds.

People need to get involved and report things. If they had reported this aggressive dog, the little dog would not be where he is today.  But they don’t — they “don’t want to get involved”

Have a Happy New Year.

Decaying levees magnify Green River flood risk

By Highlands Community Council

The rows of giant sandbags now lining the Green River may calm residents who feared water could swamp its banks. But the new barrier only masks risks still hidden below.

Beneath the stacks of plastic designed to prevent flooding from a damaged dam rest aging levees in serious decay. The right mix of storms could wipe them out and flood the valley before the river even hits its crest.

When going green means you can’t go on green

By Highlands Community Council

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don’t burn hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm - a problem blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.”I’ve never had to put up with this in the past,” said Duane Kassens, a driver from West Bend who got into a fender-bender recently because he couldn’t see the lights. “The police officer told me the new lights weren’t melting the snow.
